On Nov. 16th, 1949 students stormed Gravensteen Castle in Ghent, lowered the iron gate, and occupied the castle to protest a tax that increased the price of beer. When the police and fire brigade came to get them out, they threw fruit from the tops of the walls at them. Eventually the students were removed from the castle, but due to public support no students were charged — and the beer tax was overturned. The prank, known as the Battle of Gravensteen, is celebrated every year with a parade. This fruited, hazy IPA is a playful homage to this delightful “battle”.
