We always love testing out new hops. One that has been on our list for a while now is Idaho Gem. This is a fascinating hop, not only because of the promise of delicious fruit flavors, but also because it was actually discovered growing wild in the Western US State of Idaho, which boasts the motto, the Gem State. Almost all hops on the market today are intensively bred, cross-bred and selected for specific traits before becoming available to brewers. So this really is a surprise gem. As it turns out, however, the story of the hop’s name is even more interesting…at least for us! Long before this hop was discovered and scaled up, something completely different also was given the name Idaho Gem…the world’s first ever cloned mule. The furry Idaho Gem was born in 2003 and went on to have a successful career in Mule Racing (yes, apparently that really is a thing). He is still alive in 2022 and is long retired. So we named this beer to raise a toast to this champion mule and scientific pioneer. This 6.6% hazy IPA features the aforementioned Idaho Gem, rounded with some Motueka and touches of Ekuanot. Tropical and stone fruit are prominent with notes of citrus, floral, and pine. This juice is so delicious, that we think even a cloned mule would be happy to drink it after a race or in retirement.
